17th King’s Royal Rifle Corps arrived in France in March, 1916 as part of 117 Brigade, 39th Division and after the requisite period of trench instruction under the tutelage of more seasoned battalions, they took over a sector of the front line in the Festubert-La Bassée area of France.

On 4th June, 1916, 17th King’s Royal Rifle Corps were in the front line at Givenchy and co-operated in a small operation carried out by 16th Sherwood Foresters who raided the enemy trenches. At the same time two mines were blown and a party from C Company moved forward to occupy the newly formed craters. This they did successfully but not with out cost. Four men were killed, one of who was Edward Armstrong.
